No, you need not open the wrapper on the capsule as the whole capsule must be inserted into the slot provided in the LB machine.

plastic body of the capsule toxic? Is it recyclable?
A: The
plastic body of capsule is a food grade non-toxic recyclable
material. Considering the strict European regulations for food &
safety, the capsule has stood its test of time & Lavazza
produces tens of millions of capsules every year.
Q: Can we make 2 espressos from
one capsule?
A: No,
every capsule is a single-serve espresso capsule and hence can
suffice only a 60 ml / 30 ml / 15 ml shot of espresso for an
individual. The capsule holds 8gms of freshly grounded coffee
which is just enough for an optimal double shot.
